I dunno, but they could just purchase a $100-$200 capture card and still record through HDMI in 1080p.  Might have to do s ome research to find which ones will allow them to do so.

Getting a capture card that records hdmi thank to hdcp.  However it is pretty easy to strip hdcp, I bought this from amazon and I capture 1080p from the ps3 perfectly.  ViewHD 2 Port 1x2 Powered HDMI Mini Splitter for 1080P & 3D
