This is quite bad as anyone with slow internet will have a gimped PS4 because 300MB download is massive on sub-broadband speed. I hope second shipment PS4s and beyond will be fully functional out of the box. Not a problem for me personally either way as I am wating until about May 2014 to buy my PS4.
Ironic though that Xb one is now the offline console and PS4 requires mandatory internet before all offline functions will work properly.
