Hot Drink in Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Q: Can I put hot drink in my stainless steel water bottle?
If your stainless steel water bottle is single-walled, that is made of only one layer of stainless steel, then it's not a good idea to put piping hot drink into it.
It isn't because the hot liquid will melt your bottle, but due to safety reasons. (In case you're curious, the melting point for stainless steel is above 1,500 degree Celsius; boiling water is only around 100 degree Celsius.)
Stainless steel being a metal conducts heat much better than poor conductor of heat, such as plastic. So, when a bottle made of stainless steel is filled with hot liquid, it'll heat up in a fairly short period of time. And if you touch the bottle before it cools down, you'll likely burn your hands, drop the bottle and potentially end up with some major burn on other parts of your body as well.
Smart Work Around
Having said that, it doesn't mean there's no way to work around this limitation of stainless steel bottle. You can get an insulated tote, which is basically a bottle carrier made of thick fabric. And the good thing is, an insulated tote works both ways. That means, it can keep hot liquid warm, and it can also keep cold drinks cold for longer period.
Another commonsense way is to let the liquid in the bottle cool down to a more comfortable temperature first before manhandling the bottle.
Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottles
Alternatively, if you find yourself having to fill your bottle with hot drinks often, you may want to get yourself a double-walled stainless steel bottle instead, such as those from ThinkSport.
Double-walled simply means there are two layers of stainless steel instead of one. The vacuum in between the two walls acts as an insulator and makes the bottle works very much like a Thermos flask. With this layer of insulation, the outer layer of the bottle will not get heated up as much and the bottle will remain safe to touch even if you fill the bottle with very hot liquid.
