Does any one know why the Gaf thread was closed?

Probably because the rumor was so weak to begin with that it couldn't stand anymore and the trolling was rampant.

Yup. One guy played the game at an event and said it was 720p. Famous runs with it without any confirmation and now we are in this situation.

then cboat said the same and then the MS PR guy didnt deny the rumor.

CBOAT has a track record of being wrong  (example, he stated XBO GPU downclock, it was actually upclocked) and Penello/Phil Spencer stated they dont get priviliged access to 3rd party builds of game so they simply wouldn't know. Plus Penello is pretty non-technical, so his reponse in view of these two facts is totally understable. All he could really do was say "Ive seen it running and it looks great". There is no way for a layperson to tell what resolution a game is running at. It is generally only found out by arcane pixel counting of framebuffer grabs that only 2-3 people in the world know how to do, unless the company actually states it (which can happen, EG, Ryse=900P admitted by Crytek).

The fact GAF mods closed the thread could suggest they found out it wasn't true. Either way, it's a typical embarresment for GAF.

Love that you used an example that was wrong. CBOAT said there was yeild issues not a downclock. You could have said POP for E3 if you wanted to say he was wrong.

Only 2-3 people in the world? Haha that's funny.

Mods closed that thread because there was no new information on it. They said to make a new thread if anything else arises. They do it with every thread that takes off like that.

CBOAT was behind the downclock rumors though, I have it on good authority. He just passed them on to thuway and others who posted it. He's the ringleader anyway. I also heard he initially posted the downclock was true then edited the post later.

But thuway, Proelite, and others DID post the downclock, the same people who are behind this 720P COD on X1 rumor. CBOAt also swore PS4 was releasing in Oct. He's pretty much 0% on recent comfirmable rumors. Mostly he deals in anti-MS FUD ("MS is in disarray behind the scenes, new driver kills 20% of performance" for example). And that FUD is non specific so it's not really disprovable. When he says something that is disprovable recently, it usually turns out false.

"ESRAM yield issues" is an example of non provable FUD. We cant prove or disprove that. They seem to have plenty of preorders and they upclocked the GPu though. and MS denied it, so I'd say the vast majority of evidence is against it. The only evidence supposedly for it is MS dropping some launch countries, but sales in those dropped countries are so low they wouldn't materially affect supply. MS said the reason was Kinect/localization, and that makes far more sense.

And yeah, I only know of two people who do the pixel counting, Alstrong on B3D and Quaz51 on B3D and GAF. Their findings then get spread all over. Do you know others? It's pretty difficult as far as I can tell, you're welcome to learn how and add a third person (heh). More people can learn I'm sure, but nobody bothers and I imagine it's pretty difficult.

Anyways you need released games for the pixel counters to do their magic. PR screenshots can be innacurate, you need direct framebuffer grabs to pixel count, which tend to only happen after a game is released. Short of companies telling us the resolution (and even then we must be careful, as PR people dont understand the difference between display resolution and internal rendering resolution), we must wait until the games are out.
