There's almost nothing Microsoft can do to salvage this generation. They can't compete on quality, they have no advantage in games (Sony's big exclusives are coming on strong), they can't compete on media (no built-in next-gen media), they can't compete on storage (you can pop a new hard drive into Sony's machine, no problem), they can't compete on fun and family-friendly (the Wii takes the cake). Their price advantage is chimerical - Sony is making so much money in EU markets, it could afford a $50 price cut without breaking a sweat.

I seriously have to question why Microsoft is in this industry. It may be time for Samsung or some up-and-coming Taiwanese company to get into the console biz, and provide some honest competition for Sony.

Sony doesn't have a single AAA exclusive, MS has 5.

MS has one of the leading high-definition download services, Sony has a price-increasing format that is yet to prove it can survive against DVD and downloads long enough to become mass market.

Joe Six Pack isn't aware he can switch harddrives, Microsoft has the largest hardrive built into the console.

Microsoft beats any other console on fun, but I concede is has far fewer g rated games than the Wii.

Sony is making plenty of money off inflated EU hardware prices (hardly a thing on software), but MS is making plenty of money off every PC in existence.  They could afford a $150 price drop without breaking a sweat, they just don't want to.

By honest competition do you mean beating the PS3 by more than the 6 and a half million the Xbox 360 is, or more than the 11 million the Wii is?

Wow, we had a fair debate, and then a total fanboy response walked in the room.

*sigh* And yet I will respond. You can define AAA however you want, but 89% isn't much less AAA than 90%. There are a lot of great exclusives on the PS3 now, and several of the highest selling 360 games are on the PS3 (CoD4, GH3, Oblivion). As previously stated in the post you responded to, Sony's big exclusives are coming on stong and most people realize that now. You may have head of GT5, MGS4, LBP, etc. M$ is one of the leaders in HD downloads because not many peope are doing it. Aren't they behind itunes, netflix, amazon, etc? Regardless, blu-ray is catching on faster than DVD did and most people see the added value that the PS3 provides. An add-on is not going to even that out, either, should M$ give in to paying Sony (and the rest of the blu-ray consortium) royalties. M$ charges $100 for a 120gb hard drive if you screwed up and bought a Core or Arcade and want to play GTA IV and other games that require a hard drive. I'd rather have a smaller HD in a fairly priced console. "Joe Six Pack" is more likely to know that the PS3 has blu-ray now, though. You can't argue which console is more "fun" because that's subjective. Based on review scores the 360 still has the best lineup, but that gap closes every month. They can't afford to drop the price $150 because their games divison needs to make money. Come on. The 360 is in trouble because unlike the PS3 last year when it was trailing, the PS3's future looks much brighter. The lineup is better for PS3 and the system is a much better deal. Not to mention the PS3 is a great piece of hardware and he 360 still has a plague.
