Not the same thing at all. A Steambox would be a totally new product. They could do anything, as there is no existing customer base to lose. On the other hand, making radical changes to an existing product line will almost always be met with some degree of anger. That would be the case regardless of the company in question.
In the case of the XO, you had quite a few Xbox fans who were upset, partially because Microsoft fucked up the Q&A afterwards. It was a total FUBAR and you can't whitewash that away with "blah blah Sony fans."
