In my opinion, the PS3's steady sales can be explained (in part) because the high price tag discourages any unplanned purchase of the system. At $400/$500 your typical consumer is not going to be as motivated to buy a system because an interesting game was released (or to buy a system because they feel like it) as they would be if the system was $200 or less.
