A lot of people played Mortal Kombat for the story mode.
Besides, not everyone is a fighting game pro, 99% of everyone who plays fighting games aren't atleast, and after playing through whatever story or campaign mode, or maybe arcade once, other than playing online or offline with friends, they probably don't touch the game again. These same people aren't in training mode on a regular basis as these people don't play fighting games and only fighting games.
