It's all a matter of graphical tradeoffs. It always is. And that will never change. There is more power in next gen, but some developers will always decide they would rather be 900P with more shaders, than 1080P with less.

 

And again, diminishing returns. The visually noticable difference between SD and 720P, is much greater than the difference between 720 and 1080.

That dimishing returns arguement comes from the fact that the doubling of transistors are taking longer and longer therefore the improvement of graphics over time is getting smaller too. So no excuses for either of them. :P

No, the diminishing returns argument comes from basic geometry.

Were not diminishing just yet are we ? We still don't have games implimenting fluid simulation and thermodynamics along with bidirectional path tracing, now do we ?

Diminishing returns when filling a surface with squares (or triangles or hexagons) always exists. And fluid simulation or thermodynamics has nothing to do with it.
