I went through dozens of N64 controllers Sony saw that Nintendo had something there and copied it to implement it later. If this reminds you of the PS Move or the rumble pack, it might be by accident. They placed the sticks not as the main input option, that was still the dpad. The games were not designed for those sticks only and neither was the controller. The analog sticks felt better on the PS1 than the N64, but the placement was bad and the software was not specifically made for it. And even today the thumbsticks are not well placed on the PS4 controller. |
Strange. I always felt the N64 stick was very badly placed. The position my hands had when holding the controller to have access to the stick was cramped and uncomfortable. That's one of the reason why I could never finish OoT on the N64, as I despised the controller (for the stick itself as well).
With the Dual Shock, my thumbs fall just at the right spot on the sticks.
The 360 controller's left stick is also problematic for me when I play for an extended period of time. The part of my palm closest to my thumb gets sore after a short while because I have to force my thumb into a position that isn't natural to it.
Now, since I'm on the subject of the 360 controller, people telling me that the 360 controller is best for FPS have me frowning wtf style. In a FPS game, both sticks are used about as much as the other. One to walk, the other to look around and aim. But because the stick to walk is at a supposedly "better" spot than on the DS controllers, it's better? Half of it is still supposed to feel unnatural... No? ¬_¬
But I guess half more natural is still better to some than the alternative... Whatever.

Those things broke faster than the average walkthrough of Super Mario 64.
