Sort of depends.
Generally I prefer symmetrical, because fuck sticks. Gamepad rules.
If I HAVE to use the sticks though. Asymmetrical.
Ergonomically speaking, where the gamepad and where the buttons are on a PS2 controller are the most comfortable positions. That's why the buttons are there. It's the best place for primary input.
