They're not all engineering students, some of them have different professions in mind. As it states in the article, one is in business finance (i.e. accounting).
I agree, interns are often put into busy work, but busy work typically has something to do with what they're doing. My niece and nephew both did internships for engineering. Neither of them did menial tasks such as assembly line work. Both of them filled important roles within the organization. Though my niece's internship was a summer role, but my nephew was hired out of his.
