I've come across this french (with english subs) documentary about the history of shoot'em ups in Japan. It's quite good so I've decided to post it.

 

Part 1: The beginning, the 70's and 80's.

Part 2: The 90's, fall in popularity, emergence of the bullet hell subgenre.

Part 3: Treasure, amateur scene.
