The Aliens Colonial Marines was a trailer situation. I don't recall a playable demo open to the public.

Are you sure? I remember a couple of youtubers being excited about the game after playing the E3 demo....

Yeah I'm pretty certain it was just highlights of the game that got people excited. A little off-topic but the game looked bad to me even before it was released, I couldn't understand why people were excited.
