I do think it's a little odd that they are running on Nvidia and not AMD. But Microsoft and Nvidia have a whole bunch of projects together to it makes since in some ways.

The only project that I could think of when they cooperated together was when microsoft funded nvidia to get rid of 3Dfx out of the market cause of 3Dfx trying to threaten the gaming industry with glide. 

They have a really powerful server side cloud graphics rendering that they have been working on with Microsoft.  It allows pre rendering on the server, that is streamed, then final rendering locally.  It allows them to do ray tracknig type stuff and other things you need massive amounts of power to do.

It's pretty neat.
