You're right, they don't need to at all. Y'see, there's this publisher you may have heard of called Gameloft...

cause not supporting WIi U is what got them where they are at?

I think the point is that Gameloft is part of Ubisoft.

Indeed, that is the point. Ubisoft has had this exit strategy ready longer than anybody. They might not need to use it, but all the publishers are glancing at the door nervously because they know what happened to THQ could happen to them. Square Enix is already packing its bags for the journey.

The problem is that the collective console game industry is apparently incapable of embracing innovation, so it can only come from outside. The Wii U is barely innovative, and the industry still can't embrace it. In fact, they'd just as soon watch it die. The Xbox One, actually the most innovative console this generation, is only being supported because the innovation is optional. All the games worth playing will be designed for the gamepad, while the Kinect is used as a glorified remote control.

Meanwhile, growth in console gaming is stalling and the risks and barriers to entry have never been higher. The Wii U is not some kind of lynchpin in this whole process — that was the Wii's role — it's just one more consequence of it.

What will happen when EA, Activison and Ubisoft are the only console publishers standing? They will enact their dream world of only one game console. It may already be here as Microsoft and Sony fans bicker over which box has faster RAM and more cloud. And it will slowly suffocate the dinosaur that console gaming has become.

"The worst part about these reviews is they are [subjective]--and their scores often depend on how drunk you got the media at a Street Fighter event."  — Mona Hamilton, Capcom Senior VP of Marketing
