Good call. Look to God of War and Prince of Persia for examples of games that don't piss around with this stuff. They throw you into the action, and the moment you find yourself asking "How do I do this?" the answer pops up on the bottom of the screen.
I'm ok with things like RPGs starting slow with long cutscenes -- at least then you know you're just watching, and these passive scenes are designed to be entertaining. It's when the game starts with really boring instructional gameplay that I get annoyed. I don't know how many FPS games I've lost interest in before the end of the 30-minute tutorial, for instance.
