The most apparent benefit is the idea of a "roll-up" display which takes minimal space in transit and unfurls into a nice, big viewing area.
I've long suspected that the prospect of such displays underestimates the value of rigidity in many applications (imagine how awkward it would be to use a tablet that flopped around like a newspaper), but that may be a solvable problem.
