Smash and Street Fighter will always be more popular because they have a better emotional connection to American culture or American influenced cultures; the game design and characters are just more likeable and interesting. I never really cared about the wierdo characters from the KoF series. Smash also has a different playing style because it focuses on other things instead of focusing on technical button combos like 'traditional' fighters. But, saying that game A is better then Smash just because it has more exploitable technical combos is clear biased thinking; more of something doesn't necessarily mean better, it just depends on your point of view and what your individual needs/tastes are. For example, another thing that Smash and Street Fighter have over KoF is better/more graphics and this is why they will always be more popular then KoF, because in alot of people's viewpoints having nice 3D graphics is 'more' graphics and thus provides for a more balanced experience since art is important to them; from their point of view KoF looks like it's still stuck in the 90's.
