I find this statement baffling.

Just looking at sales for the franchise, and taking into account the respective install-base for each platform, there hardly seems to be a noticeable difference. Some games sold better on Nintendo platforms (exclusives, mainly), for multiplats (which exposes more of the fanbase to the game), the opposite seems more true.

Of course, if we combine the PS3 and 360-loving Sonic fans, then they would outnumber Wii-owning fans. Now, all SEGA has to do is ignore handhelds and there ya go!

That's not taking into account install base. Combined, the Wii and DS had an overwhelming majority in terms of systems sold. More importantly, there is significantly more opportunity for overlap between a console and a handheld than two consoless (afterall, someone could buy both if they also wanted a handheld experience).

In the end, though, pointing to the performance of multiplats on individual platforms vs one that required ownership of more specific platforms as a comparison is not presenting strong evidence.

True, but it is evidence that the Sonic fanbase is alive and well on Nintendo platforms, which is all the person was implying in the actual quote. It's the article itself which spins it into a statement on how much bigger Sonic is on Nintendo systems than others.

Considering that this was a statement addressing why the game is not coming to the Xbox and Playstation...it's not that much of a spin.

He didn't go out and say "Sonic doesn't sell on PlayStation/Xbox", only cited strong sales on Nintendo platforms dating back to GameCube. There's a history of highly successful Nintendo-exclusive Sonic games, and Sega is interested in continuing the trend. So the title must have the "not Xbox or PlayStation", because despite what the actual quote is, it must be twisted to make it look like Sega simply doesn't care about their PlayStation and Xbox-owning fans at all.

What I'm getting from this, truly, is that Sega wants to bolster Mario & Sonic at the Olymic Games (the golden goose), by focusing the fanbase for Sonic on Nintendo platforms with an exclusive or two. There's still money to be made elsewhere, particularly once PS4/XB1 finally get rolling, but Sega is more comfortable being in bed with Nintendo (at least for now).
