It's important because it means you can have Skype running, any source of music running, a browser running, and the video capture running at the same time that you're playing a game.

Why would I want all those running at once?

Skype - To chat with friends while I'm playing a game.
A music program - To listen to tunes while I'm playing a game.
A web browser - To cheat.
Video capturing - To record my game

Vita does 3 of those at once too, im pretty sure ps4 will do those 4 examples at once as well, i don tthink thats a great example for this xbox one feature tho, id expect to be able to listen to my own music and chat in a game without taking up any of the app slots, and im sure it probably can.

Was I comparing the Xbox One to anything?  I said what the Xbox One could do.

With the Xbox One you could actually listen to any supported music application.  So if Last.FM, Spotify, Clear Channel Radio, Music Unlimited, iTunes, or any other music app offers a Windows 8.1 compatible application that is also designed to work on the Xbox One, then you'll be able to listen to it.  So, for instance, an app that I wrote so I could listen to my local radio station, I could rewrite it so that it worked in Windows 8.1 & Xbox One, then publish it to the store so anyone could buy it.

Unlike with the Xbox 360, the user isn't limited to a predefined set of applications that he or she can use while gaming.  Any web-based or support application can be running in the background while you game.

That is provided of course that Flash is included in Xbone browser. A large number of sites still use flash and are starting to require new versions of Java as well.

As for OP, None of these features are appealing to me and do in fact make me not want the Xbone. I do not want a camera constantly looking at me and potentially recording everything I am doing. I already have a Harmony remote and have no use for a huge IR blaster, nor do I want one. When I pick up my controller to play a game, that is what I want to do. Having the ability to do two things at once is cool for walkthroughs etc. and both consoles can do that. I still have no use for cross-game chat or skype. I used the video chat on PS3 a handfull of times so my kids could see their grandparents but thats about it.

The other big thing for me is what MS designed the console to do from the get go. All of those "features" that they decided to take away due to backlash will more than likley find there way back into the requirements after they start to sell units. The back off was simply for them not to bomb at launch due to the huge amount of bad press and customer dissapointment. The console was designed with those features in mind and that is the direction MS wants to go. They will get there with the Xbone, it will just be after they sell enough units to recoupe some expenses.

Both consoles will have very good graphics and pretty much all of the third party games will look pretty similar. PS4 will have better looking first party games much like the PS3 did. IMO feature for feature, matched with Price, the PS4 is the better option.
