So, his idea of praising a game is saying that it's dumbed down compared to other fighters in the genre???

I didn't get "dumbed down" at all. I got accessible mechanics and a better visual design that makes it apparent you're doing something right. Probably the more zoomed in look of the fighters and emphasis on combos. Basically saying it is more open to newcomers. Doesn't mean it's dumbed down at all. I think MvC3 is open to newcomers. But a skilled person will still mop the floor with them.

It's a good thing when developers pull off the difficult task of making a game accessible and easy to pick up and play, but still deep enough that hardcore players will remain engaged. We'll see if they can pull it off.

MvC3 isn't the best example of accessibility meeting skill since it's a contest of who can spam the most (There's even an Easy Mode where you don't have to actually learn the move motions to use them), but I see what you're saying. Maybe, they'll pull off a solid fighter, but I'm not betting on it.
