Most people are hypocrites, they play Facebook or smartphones games all the time, but console gaming is almost a taboo. I've seen it happening and sometimes it really pisses me off.
Having articles about video games being the reason why a kid killed his mom doesn't really help us much, because if it is on the news, then it most be true, and many people fall for this.
It will take a very very long time before video games are taken seriously by the media. And in general gamers don't help the current situation, just look at the GTA V Gamespot review where gamers were attacking the reviewer for a 9.0 and calling her transgender and what not, how are we supposed to be taken seriously when people acted like that?
It's a combination of people's ignorance and gamers actions, the latter is easier to change, the former is much harder, and until (if ever) games are treated like movies (not in the sense on how they are made, but how they are perceived by the public) the current situation won't change much. This is one of the reasons developers and publishers are taking the "make games like movies" route, but the issue is bigger than just that.
