How many units does a typical game in a series need to sell in Japan for it to be a big series for you?

Just off the top of my head didn't Tales of Xillia 2 do about 400k in Japan? That's a respectable number for sure but I don't think it's enough alone to have any large-scale influence on hardware adoption for Sony or MS.

The first Tales of Xillia did 670k though, idk why the second one sold so much worse even though people say its better than the first...Even Tales of Graces and Vesperia sold more, if you count the 360+PS3 versions of Vesperia and the Wii+PS3 versions of Graces.
