Yep. But Sony made a lot of mistakes when setting up PSN. I know a few situations where people called customer service and complained enough to where they had it changed, keeping all their Trophy data in the process, so I'm guessing they tied it to some hidden ID number with no way of being able to alter it quickly through all their databases. A lot of MMOs do this because their main goal is to prevent duplicate names and this is the easiest way to do it.
