Those two things disappointed me the most about the game, and created a lot more "ludonarrative dissonance" than any of the combat. It was my favorite game this year (funnily enough), yet it was also a massive waste of potential.

Irrational tried to appeal to too many different audiences at once, and the game felt uneven and splintered as a result.
