It probably helps with sales, but i doubt by much. It will likely become a much bigger deal this gen. Once 60fps or 1080p become the norm, having 720p or 30fps will makes games feel more sluggish and dated. (same was PS2 games can feel dated from the 4:3 ratio).
60fps and 1080p make games feel and play much better. Resolution is the less important of the two, but any game becomes sightly better if it's resolution is higher. (This is for consoles. When it comes to PC i can barley play a game at 720p in fullscreen).
