At a glance, it looks like the GameCube sold about 3.3 million from launch to the end of its first full year in the US. I just checked, and the PS3 sold less than that. So if the PS3, which had a worse first year than the GameCube in the US, could go on to sell about 25 million in that country alone, then I don't see why the Wii U should be so afraid of that purple line.
