While all other major American car manufacturers had to be bailed out by the government Ford did not, I'm very much ignorant of the situation as a whole but if this guy was in charge of Ford over that period then he has to get some of the credit for that.
As for experience in the field that really means very little. What most people fail to realize is the that the person in charge really doesn't need to know how to do the job of those below him/her, they simply need to know how to put the right people in the right places and listen to those that do know what they're talking about. Not saying this guy would be good either way because again I'm ignorant of the situation but don't count someone out just because they are from a different field - business is business and people management is people management no matter the field.
