I don't think you're going to see a split ticket like this any time soon. We have heard for years that there is "no real difference between the parties" and frankly putting both parties on the same ticket like that would reinforce that idea big time.
It is one thing for Obama to diversify his cabinet like he's talked about doing, but putting a republican on the ticket with him would alienate an awful lot of people who want nothing to do with voting for republicans.
Plus I suppose you could even argue the assassination problem. If you have a republican as vice president, wouldn't that increase the risk of some wacko going after him to get a republican in office? Even a moderate republican is going to put different judges on the bench than Obama would, etc.
