In what way did Sony ever think they could compete with Nintendo in the handheld market?

They have their chance to show if they learned anything with the PlayStation Vita.
If they don't do good with the Vita, they're probably gonna exit the handheld console market.
They better hurry up. Nintendo is sewing up that market FAST.
If it ain't ALREADY sewn up.
