It's self-reassurance on both sides that they're getting the most bang for their buck. It's also a desire to see their choice win in the end because they translate that to meaning more for them and they want to help make it happen by convincing people that they'll get more out of this platform than that one. In the end it's silly because years from now the argument won't be centered on how the games look because they'll both be staring at the PC's ass from way ahead of them. Instead it will be about everything else like features, total number of exclusives, online reliability, and who has the better OS. After about 5 years of that no one will really care and it will be all about personal preference. Gamers will be gamers again instead of the drooling, snarling monstrosities a new console war turns them into.
Halo 4 was beautiful. The Last of Us was beautiful. BioShock Infinite was beautiful. By the time these games came out it mattered only to the most petty and extreme of fanboys which looked better or which was the better version. Remember when Lair was "only possible on PlayStation 3"? Go look at that game now and tell me that the Xbox 360 wouldn't be able to pull it off. Graphics are most definitely important. Too many people try to downplay how important they are. After all, if I want to immerse myself into an experience I can't get that by firing up Super Mario Bros 2 or the original Twisted Metal or even Knights of the Old Republic. However, there comes a point where people realize that the graphics, after achieving a certain height, become entirely secondary to gameplay and all of this bickering will really just serve as a future reminder how stupid and little we so easily become.
