Uh, Riot... King of Fighters is a fanservice game itself.

Look up Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury... etc.

The fact that the characters keep gaining history and backstory just further makes your point kind of moot.

I mean would you expect someone who doesn't know anything about KOF characters to like the game as much as Smash Brothers if they are Nintendo fans.

(It's pretty obvious you are a fan of KOF characters.)

Am i the only person who put a lot of tokens in Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury in the arcades?

Capcom vs SNK 2 is what got me into King of Fighters. The way SNK's characters played is what got my attention. The move canceling into huge combos and such. I was moved by the way SNK's games played, not the just because of the characters themselfs. I do love the games characters, though! :)

The point is, it's silly to claim that Smash Brothers is less of a game because of fanservice appeal.

The reason the first couple King of Fighters were big is because it is a fanservice game. People were able to send Fatal Furty characters up against all those lesser SNK game franchises and beat them into the ground!

Or something like that. Had KOF just been another SNK game i doubt it'd be where it is today, destined like all the other SNK games to be replaced with similar gameplay as a new franchise.

That's what was so great about the KOF series.  It gave SNK a sense of focus they were lacking.
