Except it doesn't ruin it for everyone else, infact you're the first guy to have a problem with this that i've heard about. I'm sure there's more of you, but you're clearly a small minority. The mismatched rankings were another story, but now that's fixed. 

Years of ND forums will show you otherwise.

googled "naughty dog forum connection problems". Got quite a lot of threads, most with few replys. Almost all were about connecting to factions and mismatched ranks, very few on in-game lag... you could always cite some but still, the majority of players get along fine with only occasionnal hiccups, otherwise it wouldn't be so popular and i wouldn't have a ton of people on my friends list who play it for hours at a time, all the time, including myself.
