I'm pretty sure the light bar tells you which player you are (player 1, player 2, etc.). It also lets you know that the controller is on. Those are 2 uses. FACT!

I've already said I wouldn't buy one at launch. My original post was perfectly fair until some decided to try and bait me. As usual on this site the Sony fans gets away with a tap on the wrist while starting the trouble then those they antagonize get banned.

Not sure why everyone STILL seems to not realise the light ABSOLUTLY CAN be turned off. It can be done so by devs. In any game the devs can give you an option to turn it off. So said Yoshida. /thread
