Compared to this the PSABR render puts me off :/

What you have is a low poly model. Obviously with better tech they can add more detail. Snake is a perfect example of this. Though his main feature remain the same there always tweaks and added detail with each game. Another example is advent Cloud Strife, his face looks radically different from his PS1 art. I think they did a passable job.

Might want to check his skin tone again.
