I dont think the problem is solved getting more impersonal with your own children. Its a society problem. It can be avoided with good parenting because not all of us are thugs.
I would more easily blame the internet and other people's kids beeing a bad influence. Choose who you allow them to go out with and put them on a private school. It should lower the chances of anything bad happening.
