Did you set to AT transmission? In Manual transmission you need to use clutch ir you enable it on the whell... Manual is the best way to play to gain mileseconds. And clutch didn't work with controllers... just wheels.

A video to showing clutch enabled and disabled with the same whell... it is more configuration of your whell (GT5 can works with clutch enabled or disabled).

I imagine the game to be so much more fun with a setup like this. IMO controllers just don't cut it for racing simulation. They are okay for arcade racers, but even a cheap $50 - $100 wheel will drastically improve your experience^^
