Microsoft introduced unified memory with the original Xbox, the Wii U followed it, and now the PS4 is following it.

Microsoft used GDDR memory in the Xbox 360, and now the PS4 is following it.

Corrected. Not sure if you wrote it wrong or anything, but the 360 actually used GDDR3 and EDRAM, while the original XB is the one with unified memory, since it used DDR RAM for everything. :)

No, it was unified.  The 10MB EDRAM was a graphics (frame) buffer, which the CPU could send data to or retrieve data from the GPU, but it didn't otherwise go through it.  In otherwords, the 10MB of EDRAM was for graphics only.  If the game needed to access memory for non-graphical functions, it did so directly through the GPU.

The CPU did, apparently, go through the GPU to get to the memory.
