I prefer photo-realistic games, because they suck you in and make it so you're a part of the game. Artistic games often times have poor art direction and crappy atmosphere (Kingdom Hearts is a prime example of this). There are, however, some genres that work better with an artistic setting -- fighting games, platforming games, hack & slash games -- but photo-realism is the best way to go in most cases.
