One can be very knowledgable and have a religion. I think it has nothing to do with how intelligent a person is.

No doubt, but one can have much knowledge about the stock market and no knowledge of physics, biology, chemistry, anthropology - hence scientifically illiterate.
The point is not that these people are stupid, it's that religion allows them to say these things without question. It is accepted even when evidence defeats the faith position. It's very dangerous.
