"I don’t remember there ever having been such a consensus as to the winner before launch."
Seriously? Did this guy just start gaming yesterday?
The PS2 - goes without saying. The hype in the gaming mags was through the roof.
The PSP - Dan Hsu, EGM editor in chief (and a respectable writer BTW), summed up the general consensus best, "The DS touch screen is genius but that won't keep it from being second to Sony's PSP".
The PS3 - was supposed to "Dreamcast" the 360 and Nintendo was to be lucky to have 15% of the console market for the 7th gen. Sony's E3 2005 target renders furthered this opinion.
Once the Vita rolled around people were a bit more skeptical due to recent history and the state of the handheld gaming space, but like Rol pointed out, that didn't stop Moriarty from IGN (not a respectable writer BTW) from declaring that the Vita would handily best the 3DS.
While the PS4 may well dominate this coming generation, where the hell does this guy get the idea that this kind of lopsided fanfare has never been present before?
