You guys are seeing it only from an XBox One perspective. Home Gold is a touted feature of the Xbox One. Current users of the Family Plan will now need to pay for each account individually if they choose not to upgrade to the One. My family plan, for example, expires in 2 months and we have 4 accounts. Come 5 months from now, we will need to renew 4 accounts seperately since we have no plans to upgrade.

Most current gen console owners will not be upgrading to next gen consoles soon, unless you believe the X1 is going to have 35+ million sales within the first year.

It's not a "CURSE YOU MICROSOFT AND YOUR SPAWN!" moment, but it still sucks as we will now be paying more for the same.
