Keep lying to yourself. At some point people will have to realize that the Wii U itself is trash. To give you a more drastic example, Nintendo could have focused all of their development efforts on the Virtual Boy and it still wouldn't have saved the system, because its design was simply horrible. Now the Wii U is nowhere near as bad as the Virtual Boy, but it's still a machine that is holding the software back. People would like to play Nintendo software, but they would need to buy a Wii U for that and most people do not like the Wii U, because they don't like to pay for expensive trash. If we go with your theory that 2D Mario is everyone's second game, we'll have to remove NSMBU sales from the Wii U software total and then look at what is left as people's first game, the one they bought the system for. We have Nintendo Land, but even if we assume that people bought the Wii U for that game (which is quite a stretch), we still have to address another 1m Wii U owners. Your theory is telling us that they bought the system because of third party software and that's the point where you have no other choice but to admit that your theory is hogwash. |
I'll admit that it is of course not 1-to-1. Otherwise NSMBWii would've sold 100m. There are in fact people that don't buy NSMB altogether, but nevertheless I think it's true for the most part.
NSMB2 is still the most perfect example, the game didn't really boost hardware sales on a high level, yet it's sold 6m by now because it keeps like a 50% attach-ratio every week. Regardless of HW sales. People buy the 3DS for something else and then get NSMB as their second game. It's going to be the same for WiiU. Regardless of what you think of the system
