Besides the fact that it sold over 2m on a userbase with barely 3.5m, the Mario game it got was a 2D Mario.
Contrary to popular belief, 2D Mario is not a big system seller on it's own. It is a big seller, it is everyone's second game. Nobody buys a system solely for 2D Mario. People buy a WiiU for 3D Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros. or Donkey Kong, but they all buy 2D Mario after that. Attach-ratio week-on-week supports this, it's perfectly visable on 3DS's NSMB.
And the 3DS was saved by both Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7
