I don't remember them being very popular and the only people I knew who played 1 and 2 were on PC. I remember the lead up to the release of GTA3 being all over national news and everyone who even liked gaming a little bit had it pre-ordered or went to stand in line. I am not a huge GTA fan but 3 was an incredible release. It has to be singlehandedly one of the major reasons the PS2 was so successful...
