I certainly don't like the idea of adding another bill, but I don't look at it the way you do. Microsoft and Sony are not charging us to use the internet, they are charging us for services they provide. Whether it be servers, free games, or just for us to foot the bill for the infrastructure already in place, it's still not simply a case of them recharging us for something we already pay for.
I wish the online multiplayer remained free with Sony's next gen system, but with all the money that company is losing, especially on all the infrastructure it is putting in place just to catch up with Live, I can see why they've changed their ways. Gaikai, social media, free games and all the other goodies aren't free to them and don't magically appear out of thin air so I can see these companies looking to every consumer that benefits from the system's online capabilities to pay even if they don't/won't use all the services available. Sad but still not the same thing as them recharging us to use our internet lines.
We've been spoiled too long, but now that the services are becoming way more robust and unified, I'm not surprised we're getting charged. At least we can expect better/more reliable experiences out of it.
