For those of you old enough to play GTA 1 and GTA 2, how popular was the series then before GTA 3?

Played all of them starting from number one on PC and it was pretty popular on there.

I remember playing the second one on PS1 but it wasn't really mainstream then. The series didn't really take off on consoles until 3 came along and blew everyone away.
