For their own good however, they were way too powerful.

They were expensive, they made the generation drag on for far too long and they lost both MS and Sony a lot of money. Not completely into the specifics, but I think Sony burned through all the profits they made off the PS and PS2 with the PS3. Sure they make a profit on it now, but they can't be near recouping all their losses from the first four years. I think MS made their losses back by now, but combined with the original XBox, they still haven't made any real profit off their entire gaming endeavour. Besides that, their longevity could affect the 8th gen. PS360 could still be considered 'good enough' and many could be disappointed by the 8th gen as they expected another unrealistic jump in power after the oversized 6th-7th gen jump.
