For those of you old enough to play GTA 1 and GTA 2, how popular was the series then before GTA 3?

it wasnt that popular outside of a few really core gamers, not even close the difference is night and day. I played the original 2, wished i played the London one, which i think its high time to have another GTA NOT in the US. but they were good games
